5.30 "Frozen Heart"

THE FROZEN HEART is a tribute both to novelist, Irene Nemirovsky, who died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz aged 39, and to the people who survived under the Nazi regime.

At the time of her death, Nemirovsky, had been working on a five-novel series based on occupied France which lay hidden for almost fifty years.
The play examines the war and the experiences of women through the letter writing of Francois, whose fiancée is in the resistance and through Monique, a night club singer who hates the Germans but finds herself falling in love with one.

‘Linking it all together is the brilliant Gladstone Wilson on piano as Monique tells some of her story in song. Her beautiful voice transports you to a French cabaret creating atmosphere and style for this absorbing, emotionally charged production.’ Review, Lichfield Garrick 2009.

7pm: "Lulu 7" written by Abi Zakarian and directed by Sarah Berger

LULU 7 is inspired by Frank Wedekind’s ‘Lulu’ plays:  originally conceived as a single play, the two pieces tell the story of Lulu; a woman who rises in German society through her relationships with wealthy men, but who later falls into poverty and prostitution.Written to be performed by seven actors playing the seven different incarnations of Lulu, each monologue explores a different facet of her as she ages, progresses through society, and is continually renamed and reconstructed according to the fantasies of the people she encounters throughout her life.

8.30 pm: "Portia"

featuring Clare Cameron

written and directed by Robert Gillespie

presented by Jane Nightwork Productions

Has the way women select their partners changed that much since Portia and her trio of caskets? Do women still have to exhibit more “masculine” behaviour in order to have their voices heard?

Preparing to go on stage to play the role of Portia, Isabel reflects on the choices she’s made as a jobbing actress, the choices she’s made as a woman and where the edges of the actor and character meet.

A philosophical comedy, Portia compares the expectations of Venetian society with those of contemporary British society and takes a new look at an old story.  Portia has been specially written  for Clare Cameron who plays Isabel. Clare will shortly be appearing as Jocasta in Oedipus The King, part of Oedipus Re-told, another Jane Nightwork Production, which will play at the Tristan Bates Theatre in Jan 2014

Clare will be donating her profits from ticket sales to Women for Women International, a charity who helps women survivors of war. You can find out more at www.womenforwomen.org.uk or follow on Twitter or Facebook @WomenforWomenUK
