A day dedicated to writers, writing and learning how to get your writing read, seen and produced



Writing is one of the more isolated art forms. It is not just the effort if creation it is also learning how to sell your work, find representation

 

  • 10 am Bootcamp : An interactive discussion as to why you write? Where you see your writing leading. Understanding your target market, the practicalities of staging, marketing, budgeting and casting your work. Are you writing for the love of it or because you want to see it out there? The advantages of workshopping and using rehearsed readings to develop your work. Together with  Lisa  Foster the literary agent,and a commissioner we will be looking at writing adaptations, how to promote your work, protect your work and get it performed. Peter Smith from Samuel French Ltd will be joining us to talk about getting your play publishes, amateur rights etc.

 

  • The writer, director ,producer Steve Hawes will illustrate part of the process he is currently going through in order to get a screenplay written, by reading an excerpt of his work and talking it through with you.
    We will be looking at different genres of writing, adaptation, screenwriting, tv and film and theatre, and  there will then be a practical session on structure and working with directors and actors on new writing. An experienced director and a selection of actors will work through scenes with you. 

        Please bring a scene you would like to work on with us.



  • 1.30-2.30pm. The lunchtime showcase is a new work in progress "Tinned Goods" by Fiona Whitelaw, directed by Liz Bagley"August 1984 in a Yorkshire mining town. Having found themselves divided from former friends by the men's choice to strike or not, the play explores the journey travelled by the women in this tight knit neighbourhood."



  • At 3pm there will be a staged rehearsed reading will be directed by Alan Cohen of “Off the King's Road “ by Neil Koenigsberg, after which we will have a feedback session, on the writing, the merits of rehearse readings as part of the development process and the way in which to go about staging this particular play, casting budget etc. "Off the King's Road" is receiving it's London premiere with this reading featuring Michael Brandon (pictured) and directed by Alan Cohen. "After the passing of his wife and retirement, American businessman Matt Browne takes himself off to his favourite city ,London,for a respite in a small hotel in Chelsea.Almost immediately upon arrival, Matt's world is turned upside down as his as his seven day stay tumbles into a voyage of self-discovery."

       6.00-6.30pm. An evening showcase of Daniel Cainer's new show "Schtick and Spiel"

 

Lisa Foster

Lisa is one of three agents at Alan Brodie one of the  most respected literary agents in the country. They operate worldwide and represent a fascinating array of  screenwriters, playwrights and some directors.



Alan Cohen

Alan was an associate director at the Phoenix Theatre company before joining the National Theatre as as an associate director. Whilst there he directed Animal Farm and Macbeth. he has worked with such luminaries as Anthony Hopkins, Judy Dench, an Mckellan and Maggie Smith.



Neil Koenigsberg

Neil has worked extensviely as a producer in both film and T.V, his credits include A walk on the Moon and Hidden in America. he cofounded the publicity firm PMK in 1980 and represented people such as Jeff Bridges.  We are very excited to be working with him on his play.



Steve Hawes

Steve has had a prolific career as a writer and producer, bilingual in French and English he wrote and produced the t.v series Maigret. He was head of Drama at Grenada T.V in the 80's and is currently working on both film and theatre projects.

Dwina Gibb

Dwina is a writer and artist, she has written several novels and her series of short vignettes "The Gabby Aggies" was a huge hit on Manx radio. She is the wife  of Robin Gibb of the Beegees and this is the first production of her play , "The Last Confession".
